beamjockey does an excellent overview of the changes at FermiLab. I worked there from 1984 to 1988, and could still get free drinks (if I drank, or cadged free drinks) off of the stories.
It turns out that my company's midwestern regional office is in Aurora, just south of the southern boundary of FermiLab. Going for a walk after lunch up Eola Rd. to where it T-junctions at Butterfield Rd., I saw the fences and flashing red lights and realized what was there. I mentioned it in passing to my co-workers who work in that office, and they didn't know what I was talking about. It was nearly their next-door neighbor and they weren't aware of what it was.
