Fellow Graphic Novel nominee Sandra Taylor (well, wife of nominee Howard Taylor) says it best, but Phil and Kaja were so sure that one of the more mainstream titles (distribution-wise) would win this newly-created category that they didn't even send an acceptance speech. I'll admit, I also thought the Power of Whedon would overwhelm all others, and that Y the Last Man, with graphic novel bookstore sales that dwarf Girl Genius's, would be the probable second runner.

Congratulations you guys!

What's the feminine equivalent of 'mensch'?

Those links aren't working for me, but...

Ummm... we were supposed to send an acceptance speech? Even though we didn't know if we were going to win or not? That seems a little icky, like counting our chickens.

I guess I'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out what happened. All I know is that we won, and I had to check Wikipedia to make sure!

Perhaps in future you should attend anything where you've been nominated for an award, just in case. :)

Congratulations!

As far as I can tell, it's more a courtesy to your acceptors so they don't have to suddenly come up with something on the spur of the moment. (Making yourself do so is fine, though sometimes leads to "Fuck, I've won a Hugo!")

Yes, you won, and there was much well-deserved applause; I'm sorry you and Phil weren't there to experience it.

Sure, you should always have something for your designated acceptor to say, or to say yourselves if you win. I've been a designated acceptor for other people, and I've warned them, "If you don't give me something you want me to say if you win, I'm going to say ... " and send them my prepared remarks.

Being on stage under the circumstances of winning a Hugo Award will probably make your brain melt, so you're much better off having prepared remarks just in case. It's not "counting your chickens" so much as "being prepared."

Heh, I edited yours and Phil's pages to say "won" instead of "nominated for" - my very first Wikipedia edits!

Congratulations! Phil has always been better at winning Hugos then accepting them. But it’s good to see that he is at it again.

Lisa Freitag and Greg Ketter were dignified and charming in accepting for the Foglios. I had the impression they had worked out in advance what they would say.
