alicebentleyFor the last three years Mike has commuted from Chicago (where we live) to Seattle (where his job is) for roughly one week out of four. Last week I took advantage of the shutdown of the bookstore to go with him. Marty stayed with his cousins so as to not miss any school.
I've been to Seattle before, but never for so long or with so much free time. The weather was absolutely beautiful, especially in comparison to the freezing temperatures and icy snow of Chicago. One of my goals for this trip was to check out various neighborhoods, including what houses cost and what their schools were like, as a sort of fisrt step feasibility study for the concept of moving.
Between housing prices and commute issues, there were only a couple of areas that I thought might work out well, but one in particular might work out very well indeed. Vashon Island is just about rural - houses are on 2 to 5 acre lots, and likely to stay that way due to water constraints. It's a 30 minute ferry ride from downtown Seattle, but Mike is not likely to need to go in every day anyway. We don't know what I'm likely to do next - but if it does involve commuting every day, I've never minded taking public transit, nor fairly long travel times (more reading!).
It will take lots more research and discussion before any sort of decision is made, but it's an intriguing possibility.
