English Spelling and Pronunciation

Any time I feel frustrated with the rules and customs for learning another language (a skill I've never managed to accomplish), I only need to compare with English spelling and pronunciation.

I think it's grossly unfair to include any proper nouns in such a thing, as, world-wide (as far as I know) names of people and places might or might not follow any known rule or expectation.

That's getting up into "Eye of Argon" territory in read-aloud-ability.

It sometimes seems to a traveler that everyone in the world who does not yet speak English is trying to learn it. I am bowled over with compassion for them.
