I have been a fan of anime since the mid-70's when my friend Doug Rice would get VHS tapes from some contact in Japan, and we would all sit in his living room trying to figure out what was going on. Doug knew quite a bit of Japanese, but translating on the fly still produced hilarious results.

From the early early of Capricon, and their first-ever 24 hour anime room, through the beginnings of the anime convention craze (ah, anime Central, such fun!), and the many enjoyable hours spent with the Chianime weekly meetings, anime, and the manga that spawned it, has been a steady and entertaining presence in my life.

The last few years have been different - my main laptop is old, and doesn't play videos as well as it might. Youtube and hulu are less than fun on it. Working on my MBA also meant that I didn't really have the time to give to them, or the money to buy new DVDs.

But now school is finished, and while I still have to put off buying new media for a while, I was gifted by my fabulous boss (who shares my addiction) with a paid membership to crunchyroll.com. I immediately dived in and spent many fun hours watching Natsume Yujincho, Uraboku and Otome Yokai Zakuro. I looked forward to trying out some of the other programs we talked about at work.

At least, until last week, when crunchyroll apparently has become overwhelmed with their own success. Or something. Videos load very slowly, then freeze. Yet there are almost no posts about it on their forums. I've tried the usual run of bandwidth tests and it certainly seems to be all on their end. Not a good position for a company that's relying on providing content to survive. I hope they get it together.

And then I'll watch more anime!

I've found that since they took over as an official translator (unlike Dattebayo) that I've watched Bleach very irregularly. There's the week to wait, for one, but that's not too different from waiting for the translation. The complete restrictions on display size, and there's no way, unlike over at FUNimation, to mute the glaring white 'frame'... at least not for free users.

It seemed to take a lot of the fun out of it - less collective participation, more product. I'm not even talking about the legality of it, just the presentation.

Oh, well. Maybe I'll go see if I can catch up a little, since the dogs woke me up.

Remind me to show you my autographed "Vampire Hunter D" laserdisc, complete with quick sketch of "D." Or better yet, if we can find somewhere closer than Monroe to get my player fixed, my laserdisc of the Patellero movie, which is close to indescribable.
