Surprisingly fun
Jan. 14th, 2004 07:09 pmAmong my many other tasks, I do Storytelling/Library at the private school my son goes to. We get a partial tuition waiver, and I get to talk to the teachers as more than just another mom.
Usually I choose something fairly obscure to read to them - something they are less likely to have encountered at home or through TV. Popular past choices are Kipling's Elephant Child, Pezzo the Peddler, The Big Ball of String and anything by Arnold Lobel.
Today I leaned the other way, and chose Green Eggs and Ham as well as The Cat in the Hat.
The range of options for dramatic reading in both of these made what was already a great story into something extra entertaining for both me and the kids.

This storytelling gig has really warped my view of some books. Many favorites are unsuitable for reading aloud, especially since we only have about 15 minutes and the kids REALLY want to see pictures with the text.
For one of the older classes, I'm reading The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Doom. We usually get through about four chapters a session.
